the world of relationships

While everything presented so far speaks to the process of therapy, how i work and what i believe, the framework of relationships asks for a significant shift in style.  Here we have the dynamics created between two individuals.

Relationship work focuses more on the style of communication between the two, developing ways of dealing with differences, changing patterns or disagreements, uncovering misunderstandings and creating new ways of behaving towards your partner. Understanding your partner’s point of view and developing empathy is an essential component of the work.

Shorter-term relationships typically have their own paradigm, involving a getting to know each other phase: who each really is, who you are with them, and who they are to you. There is a period of adaptation and adjustment to one another and an important component of learning each other’s expectations of the relationships.  This builds the foundation for the ‘us’ of the relationship.

Long-term relationships have their own challenges, where counseling tends to be focused on overcoming habitual ways of relating to one other that have become negative and addressing patterns of learned behaviors that are detrimental to the relationship. Dealing with hurt, disappointment and resentment that may have built up over the years. And finding ways of revitalizing the relationship.

Pre-marital counseling:  a four-to-six session process where each explores their expectations of the relationship and engages in discussion around areas of current or potential conflict.  Can include how to blend religious views, lifestyle, financial matters, plans for future family.
